TitleThe Impact of Relevance Shifts from Text to Image on Language Skills due to the Use of New Media (CMC) Commissioned by[no commissioned project] StatusIn preparation for publication Download[not yet available] |
AbstractIn a field inquiry 84 students were asked to which extent they had access to new media and how intensively they made use of it. In addition, the the probands´writing skills were assessed. Basing on the assumption that intensive use of new media diminishes written language skills, the correlation between the two variables media use and written language skills was determined. The results are relevant to media education; they make suggestions as to the design of teaching and learning media considering the effects of those changes caused by the spread of new media. Methods: image-text-translation, standardized evaluation procedure, four-field matrix, test procedure. (As per: 2006) |
TitleCommunicative Validation (triangulation of methods) Commissioned by[no commissioned project] StatusIn preparation for publication Download[not yet available] |
AbstractTo identify possible interferences and to check alternative correlations between independent and dependent variable the triangulation method was used in the above- mentioned analysis. Research results were validated communicatively with the help of guideline-based interviews. Following the communicative or dialogical validation method the survey data is shown to and discussed with the probands. This method aims at creating concensus between “researcher and research subject” (Flick 2001, S. 327f). In addition, it should provide clues as to whether the correlation between dependent and independent variable is monocausal or whether it might be biased by other parameters. Methods: dialogical hermeneutics, guideline- based interview, feedback via e-Mail. (As per: 2006) |
TitleDevelopment of an Instrument to Measure the Factor “Experiencing” in Communication Commissioned by[no commissioned project] StatusIn preparation for publication Download[not yet available] |
AbstractTogether with the students participating in an experimental seminar and a creative meeting an “experiencing” scale was developed. With the help of this scale the communication-related “experiencing” factor of (communication) media can be determined. Methods: experimental seminar, video recording, logfile analysis, participating observation, meta planning technique, method 6-3-5 and clustering (As per: 2004) |
TitleCommunicative Experiencing Through New Media (CMC) Commissioned by[no commissioned project] StatusIn preparation for publication Download[not yet available] |
AbstractThe danger of isolation for Internet users is repeatedly brought up in media-critical literature. Due to its “dramaturgical weaknesses” communication via new media is often considered to generate poor personal experiencing. Yet is this view still tenable in the light of technical progress? It is probable that high image content counteracts poor personal experiencing. In an online- inquiry 388 persons were asked to rate the intensity of experiencing related to eleven different media types. Basing on the assumption that media types possessing high image content create more intense personal experiencing, the correlation between the variables communicational experiencing and degree of image content was analyzed. Methods: semantic differential within an online-questionnaire, factor analysis. (As per: 2008) |

TitleProcess Analysis Preparing Certification According to ISO 20000 (ITSM) Commissioned bySiemens Kundenbetreuungscenter GSS GMS KbC Statuscompleted Download[not published] |
AbstractA process analysis is a status-quo-analysis of current processes in a defined area according to explicit academic methods – e.g. in a company or business unit. First of all, it is important to recognize and disclose current processes. In a further step these are to be described, systematically represented as well as methodically documented. In simple terms: a freeze image of the examined unit is created displaying processes in an academically and methodically secured way and creating an overview that would not be visible at mere observation of single concrete processes or operational descriptions. Methods: interviews, participating observation, method 6-3-5, clustering. (together with Hahn, J. / As per: 2007) |

TitleSecond Project Term – First Interim Report (fraLine) Commissioned byUniversity of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main / Stadt Frankfurt - Stadtschulamt Statuscompleted & published Download[PDF 6,8 MB] |
AbstractThe forth Interim Report describes the second project term adding the final report of the first project term from August 2004. It focuses on development and experiences description and reflexion of the report period between September 2004 and December 2005. The topics IT- equipment, new user scenarios due to increasing networking and integration of IT in the classroom as well as the discussion of the so far existing strict distinction between financing of the “pedagogical support” under state supervision and of “technical support” under municipal supervision provide a dynamic range of topics. Against this specific background the range of responsibilities or cooperative operational processes that had been implemented or deemed necessary are described and justified. The report shows concrete results and organizational measures that aim at optimizing the offered services and therefore at consolidating the project. TitleFirst Project Term (fraLine) – Final Report Commissioned byUniversity of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main / Stadt Frankfurt - Stadtschulamt Statuscompleted & published Download[PDF 10,0 MB] |
AbstractThe model project “fraLine” features a staff consisting mainly of technical students. As a pilot project it had been initially calculated for the period of three years. Due to the very positive progress it made the cooperation partners decided to extend the project term for another three years as a start. The final report includes the entire first project term of fraLine – IT-Schul-Service until end of August 2004 and reflects developments and experiences as well as some necessary adjustments of the original concept eventually giving an outlook for the following three years of continued cooperation as of September 2004. The results of the internal and external evaluation, conducted as part of the agreed quality assurance measures, are briefly introduced. (together with Herberg, H. & Schrader, U. & Lauer, K. / As per: 2004) |
TitleFirst project term – Second Interim Report (fraLine) Commissioned byUniversity of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main / Stadt Frankfurt - Stadtschulamt Statuscompleted & published Download[PDF 270 kB] |
AbstractThe model project “fraLine” tests the non-commercial demand-oriented implementation of a central IT-school-support in the municipal area. The promptest possible resolution of IT-problems in Frankfurt schools constitutes its core business thereby providing the right conditions for the use of new media in the classroom. Practical experience in IT-school-support shows that the strict distinction between “technical” and “pedagogical support” hardly exists. Not only technical support and practical assistance but also the every-day use of media in schools has to be ensured. Likewise, the new SPoC-concept has been approved and established by now. fraLine acts as central point of contact for all requests in the field of IT-school-support. That is to say schools do not have to deal with changing contact persons or to figure out the right contact person for the respective area of responsibility. The coordination of part-time employees constitutes a special challenge which is met by the implementation and internal development of a helpdesk system with an integrated personnel-planning-tool. Until the end of the project significant experiences and data will be available answering the central question: How is it possible to develop a productive future-oriented model for IT-school-support and development that integrates such opposing requirements as making new media available in schools according to customer needs, supporting teachers sustainably in using new media and further developing the necessary IT-school-network standards without impeding pedagogical freedom. TitleFirst Project Term – First Interim Report (fraLine) Commissioned byFachhochschule Frankfurt am Main / Stadt Frankfurt - Stadtschulamt Statuscompleted & published Download[PDF 951 kB] |
AbstractThe project fraLine – IT-School-Service was established in October 2001. At the beginning of the following year several schools were able to receive fraLine service during a three-months pilot phase. For internal evaluation and service optimization fraLine uses an internal feedback system. After successful resolution of a problem a standardized feedback-questionnaire is sent randomly to the respective school and is evaluated at regular intervals. The results are directly incorporated into our current work. (together with Herberg, H. & Schrader, U. & Schermer, M. / As per: 2002) |

TitleAnalysis of Technolgies of "interactive whiteboards" in consideration of school-aspects Author/sKatharina Thülen Statuscompleted & published Download[PDF 591 kB, available only in german] |
AbstractIn this study, the student of computational engineering Katharina Thülen analyses different technologies of current interactive whiteboards. She compares a selection of whiteboards on the basis of a chosen set of criteria. These include installation options, surface conditions, resolution and writing accuracy, minimum requirements for the computers used with the interactive whiteboards, possible interference factors as well as environmental compatibility and costs. In order to subsequently determine the specific requirements of schools, the author has developed a questionnaire and conducted interviews. The conceptual design of this survey will also be presented within this study. The results of the empirical study will be published in a following bachelor´s thesis (expected in spring 2012). |
TitleHyperDesk
Author/sRobert Ogonowski Statuscompleted & published Download[PDF 1,58 MB, available only in german] |
AbstractIn his diploma thesis the computer science graduate Robert Ogonowski designs a concept for an expansion of the helpdesk system “fraDesk” into a (hyper-)linked helpdesk system (“hyperDesk”). It improves the clarity of contents for users by providing a system of sophisticated linking between event entries. The concept also includes a more user-friendly form of presentation by applying communicational graphics. (As per: 2010) |
TitleCompetitive advantages due to the implementation of Next Generation Network (NGN) in corporate communications – a cost analysis of SIP-based NGNs Author/sMarcel Kopperschmidt Statusinternal Download[not published] |
AbstractCompanies increasingly use different forms of communication. Next to voice communication eMail has established itself as a new means of communication. In the future new communication services will find their way into the work environment of corporate employees. These services, however, cannot - or at least not without involving huge costs - be implemented via traditional telecommunication systems. The following thesis deals with the development of corporate communications and requirements toward a future communications architecture. The technical concepts of a Next Generation Network (NGN) presented here are based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). A cost-benefit-analysis concludes this analysis of possible competitive advantages and cost savings due to the use of SIP-based NGNs. The results show that the implementation of Next Generation Network pays off for Corporate Communications. (As per: 2009) |
TitleAnalysis of Elements of IT-Service Management in the Technical Support of Schools under a Major School Maintaining Body as to their Consistency with ITIL Recommendations Author/sAnthony Schmelz Statuscompleted & published Download[PDF 277 kB, available only in german] |
AbstractInformation technology is becoming increasingly important in school contexts – in the classroom as well as for the school-maintaining authorities regarding equipment and operation of schools. The application of ITSM (IT Service Management) principles in school contexts, however, is relatively new since the social and political mandate to promote media competence has emerged only in recent years. In his diploma thesis the computer science graduate Anthony Schmelz investigates to what extent accepted ITSM procedures and methods, especially the well established ITSM-framework "ITIL", can be applied in school contexts. Therefore, ITIL recommendations are analysed as to their applicability to ITSM requirements of a major school maintaining body. The thesis shows that complicated distributions of responsibilities within the German school system and the elusive value product of "education" make a lot of customization necessary when implementing ITSM in schools.
