Abstract

In a field inquiry 84 students were asked to which extent they had access to new media and how intensively they made use of it. In addition, the the probands´writing skills were assessed. Basing on the assumption that intensive use of new media diminishes written language skills, the correlation between the two variables media use and written language skills was determined. The results are relevant to media education; they make suggestions as to the design of teaching and learning media considering the effects of those changes caused by the spread of new media.
Methods: image-text-translation, standardized evaluation procedure, four-field matrix, test procedure.

Abstract

To identify possible interferences and to check alternative correlations between independent and dependent variable the triangulation method was used in the above- mentioned analysis. Research results were validated communicatively with the help of guideline-based interviews. Following the communicative or dialogical validation method the survey data is shown to and discussed with the probands.  This method aims at creating concensus between “researcher and research subject” (Flick 2001, S. 327f). In addition, it should provide clues as to whether the correlation between dependent and independent variable is monocausal or whether it might be biased by other parameters.
Methods: dialogical hermeneutics, guideline- based interview, feedback via e-Mail.

Abstract

Together with the students participating in an experimental seminar and a creative meeting an “experiencing” scale was developed. With the help of this scale the communication-related “experiencing” factor of (communication) media can be determined.
Methods: experimental seminar, video recording, logfile analysis, participating observation, meta planning technique, method 6-3-5 and clustering

Abstract

The danger of isolation for Internet users is repeatedly brought up in media-critical literature. Due to its “dramaturgical weaknesses” communication via new media is often considered to generate poor personal experiencing. Yet is this view still tenable in the light of technical progress? It is probable that high image content counteracts poor personal experiencing. In an online- inquiry 388 persons were asked to rate the intensity of experiencing related to eleven different media types. Basing on the assumption that media types possessing high image content create more intense personal experiencing, the correlation between the variables communicational experiencing and degree of image content was analyzed.
Methods: semantic differential within an online-questionnaire, factor analysis.
